Athens, GA (December 27, 2021) – On Wednesday, December 22, a pedestrian was killed in a fatal Athens accident. They have since been identified by police.
According to Athens-Clarke Police, the accident happened on North Avenue around the area of Strickland Avenue at 3:45 p.m. A pedestrian identified as a 66-year-old man who lived in Athens was walking on the sidewalk when he was suddenly struck by a vehicle that went up over the curb. The driver fled the scene without stopping.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene to help those in need. The pedestrian was traumatically injured and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police confirmed that the driver who struck the pedestrian was a 31-year-old woman from Athens. They arrested her on charges of vehicular homicide in the first degree, hit-and-run, and failing to maintain her lane.
The roadway was blocked in the area for some time as police worked to clear the scene.
No further details have been released but the investigation remains ongoing.
