Georgia State Patrol officials confirmed that the accident took place at the intersection of North Columbia Street and Log Cabin Road. A 24-year-old woman from Fayetteville was stopped at the intersection with a red light in her Toyota Yaris. Suddenly, her vehicle was struck in the rear end by a semi-truck that did not slow down. The passenger vehicle then collided with a fire hydrant before both vehicles stopped in a nearby parking lot.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other local responders were immediately dispatched to the scene. The 24-year-old driver was rushed to the hospital with traumatic injuries but passed away on Saturday, January 22. The 24-year-old male driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt but told police he fell asleep while he was driving.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was issued citations for following too closely and fatigued driving. The roadway was blocked at the intersection for a period of time.
No further details have been released but the investigation remains ongoing.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
